The weekend started off damp but the rains left in time for Sunday as local youth baseball leagues in Franklin County celebrated their opening days.

Players, coaches and fans filled area ballfields for the first time this spring, officially signaling the end of winter. At Lunt Field in Greenfield, the Greenfield Minor League kicked off with former GML and Major League Baseball player Peter Bergeron serving as grand marshal in the parade. The Tri-County Cal Ripken League opened up at Pratt Field in Bernardston with a full slate of games following the parade from Kringle Candle Co. to the fields. And at Gamelin and Campbell Fields in Turners Falls, the Newt Guilbault Community League got underway with four games following a parade.

The Greenfield Girls’ Softball League had to postpone opening day for another week due to Saturday’s soggy weather and will kick off on Saturday with the parade to Murphy Park in Greenfield. The Frontier Cal Ripken League will also get underway Saturday with a parade from Frontier Regional School to Memorial Field in Deerfield.
