Highway car chase turns into foot pursuit in Greenfield

GREENFIELD — A speeding driver led police on a chase up and down the interstate Thursday before ditching the car and taking off on foot.

The speeder was first seen by a trooper on Interstate 91 north in the Whately area at about 5:25 p.m., according to state police Sgt. McKenna. The driver refused to stop, then exited the highway and got back onto the southbound side of the interstate, McKenna said.

The driver again reversed direction in Deerfield, and drove north up the interstate to Greenfield, before leaving the vehicle on Riverside Drive and fleeing on foot, McKenna said.

Riverside Drive is bordered by a bicycle path leading to Nashs Mill Road. State and local police searched the Riverside Drive housing development, as well as the bike path and the Nashs Mill Road area.

A state police helicopter could be seen circling the area Thursday evening. McKenna confirmed that the chopper was assisting in the search for the subject.

McKenna said police have an idea of who they’re looking for, but were not releasing the identity Thursday night.

No further information was available at press time.
