Selectman’s race, others at Hawley candidates’ night
HAWLEY — The town hosts a “Meet the Candidates” night Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Office, so that residents can ask candidates their questions as they prepare to go to the polls on May 5.
John F. Sears and Hussain A. Hamdan are again in a race for selectman and both are planning to attend. Last spring, Sears, Hamdan and town Treasurer Charles Stetson competed for a one-year selectman’s position. Sears won that special town election and Hamdan came in second.
Sears, the incumbent, is a town historian who has long been active with the Sons and Daughters of Hawley. Hamdan, an honor student during his days at Mohawk, became a school committee member immediately after his graduation and is a college student now.
Other incumbent candidates running unopposed for office are: Assessor Richard Kean, Moderator Kirby “Lark” Thwing (one year); Town Clerk Pamela Shrimpton; and Mohawk Trail Regional School Committee member Kirby Thwing. All but the moderator’s position are for three-year terms.
The ballot also asks voters if they would support debt-exclusion borrowing, for a new highway truck. The debt-exclusion allows the town to temporarily raise money outside the Proposition 2 1⁄ 2 tax cap, to pay for the truck. The ballot also asks the town to weigh in on whether the tree warden should become an appointed position.
Those with questions about the election or candidates’ night may call Shrimpton at 339-5518.
