Spring parade, 5k road race Saturday
On Saturday, a Franklin County Spring 5k will be held in conjunction with the fourth annual Franklin County Spring Parade.
“This event has become a symbol of the coming of spring in Franklin County. It’s a great opportunity to see friends again after hiding by the wood stove all winter,” said Michael Nelson, event chairman.
The race begins at 11:30 at Turners Falls High School on Turnpike Road. Both walkers and runners are encouraged to participate. The 5k is a fundraiser for the Unity Skate Park Campaign with all proceeds benefiting the project. More than $1,000 has been raised to date for the park. Registration is available online at fcevents.org. Sixty runners are expected to take part.
“This year we have added the 5k component ahead of the parade to encourage exercise in the fresh air. Even better, the 5k is a fundraiser for the skate park so you can be healthy and support the community all at once,” added Nelson.
The parade begins at Sheffield School at 1 p.m. The route for both events includes Millers Falls Road, High Street, Crocker Avenue, Montague Street and Turnpike Road. The theme this year is Fiesta. Homeowners along the route are encouraged to decorate their houses.
