Wave boys open with win

Veniam Darmanchev, Will Borcy and Kodey LaBombard each won two events for Greenfield High School Monday and the Wave kicked off the boys’ track and field season with a 84-61 independent victory over Putnam Vocational Technical High School in Turners Falls.

Darmanchev won the javelin in 151 feet, 6 inches, and the shot put in 41 feet, 10 inches, while Borcy swept the long-distance events with a time of 5 minutes, 20 seconds in the mile, and a time of 11 minutes, 25 seconds in the 2-mile. LaBombard won one event in the track and another in the field, taking the 800-meter run in 2:23.3, and the high jump at 5-6.

Dominic Glasson won the 200 for Greenfield in 24.3 seconds, while Andrew Grote won the 400 intermediate hurdles in 1:12.1. Scott Grote picked up a win in the discus at 108-11, and Vlad Popusoi captured the pole vault by clearing 13 feet.

Mahar 83, West Side 62 — Leo Jillson won a pair of events to lead Mahar Regional School to an 83-62 win over West Springfield High School in independent boys’ track and field meet Monday in Orange.

Jillson, who was the only double-winner for the Senators, topped all comers in the shot put (39-10) and javelin (121-10).

Ethan Nye earned top honors in the triple jump (40-7), Tom Anderson was best in the discus (98-3), Dan Bergman crossed the line first in the 100 high hurdles (17.4) and Zach Gurganus won the pole vault (8-6).

Mark Pighetti won the long jump (21-11 1/2), high jump (5-8), 100 meters (11.1) and 200 meters (23.4) for the Terriers.

Girls’ tennis

Chicopee 3, Frontier 2 — Chicopee High School won two of three singles matches and split the doubles to beat Frontier Regional School, 3-2, in an independent girls’ tennis match Monday in Chicopee.

The Red Hawks earned a win at seconds singles, as Celia Speth pulled out a 7-5, 7-5 win over Natalie Obando. Ashley Barrington and Peter Bronke won Frontier’s other point at second doubles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kailyn Plante and Weronika Jaiorski at second doubles.

Frontier (0-1) travels to Greenfield Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Boys’ volleyball

Westfield 3, Athol 0 — Ryan Bucko registered 14 kills and 3 blocks to power Westfield High School to a 26-24, 25-18, 25-21 independent boys’ volleyball win over Athol High School on Monday in Westfield.

Chris Paradis added 36 assists, Ivan Zuev totaled 22 digs and Eric Shilyuk chipped in 11 kills for the Bombers.

Wyatt Doiron-Larue finished with 10 kills and 10 digs for the Red Raiders. Nelson Leadbetter racked up 22 digs, Lorenzo Carra dished out 16 assists and Tyler Lajoie had 6 kills, 8 assists and 6 digs.

Athol (2-2 overall) hosts Ware High School on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
