Letter: More than just Y
Everyone knows the Y as four letters …YMCA; but from A to Z the Y brings Franklin County so much more. There’s exercise, but there is also education through our year-round full-day preschool and our Camp Apex summer reading program. There’s cardio, but there is also community volunteerism where over 300 Y member volunteers help provide “Community Meals,” donate and run our annual Free Clothing Store, donate to the Adopt-a-Family and Warm the Children efforts, we have a Relay for Life team and many more projects. We teach Pilates, but we also teach prevention with our diabetics and many wellness initiatives. The Y’s Exercise is Medicine program has grown to where over 40 primary care providers are now referring 15-20 patients per week to this very successful program. The health improvements some of the EiM graduates have achieved is truly amazing.
We give swim lessons, but we also gave over $400,000 in scholarships and financial assistance to over 2,800 youth, teen and adults in 2013. Money should not be a roadblock for someone who wants to get healthier, or for a child to learn to swim or go to summer camp.
So the Y is so much more than a great place to exercise … it’s a cause. Our cause is strengthening community and so much more. I hope you will stop down and go on a tour or check out our website at ymcaingreenfield.org or support our April Annual Campaign so we can do even more for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility efforts in 2014.
