GREENFIELD — The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts hopes a new downtown Greenfield office will help the philanthropy provide more grants, donations and scholarships to Franklin County organizations and students.

The Springfield-based foundation brought nearly $833,000 to the county last fiscal year, and President Katie Zobel said she could see that number increasing in the years to come. The satellite office, located on the basement level of the Greenfield Community College Downtown Center, is the organization’s first in its 25-year history.

“Our job at the Community Foundation is to connect generous people and ... fantastic nonprofits,” said Zobel. “I think that can happen more effectively and with greater success when you’re just seeing each other and interacting more frequently.”

There will be staff in the office each Tuesday morning, said Zobel. But it will also be used routinely for meetings and lunches with donors and organizations, she said.

GCC President Robert Pura, a member of the foundation’s board, said the college is currently not charging any rent for the space. The two parties have an understanding to review the rent agreement in the future.

“Their connection (to Franklin County) has been a good one, but I think this is a wonderful opportunity to create a stronger presence,” said Pura. “This is a strong statement on the part of Katie and the board to make themselves visible ... and build relationships up here in Franklin County.”

Community Foundation, which has organized Valley Gives Day the past two Decembers, hopes to eventually establish a satellite office in Hampshire County, too, said Zobel.
