Athol woman dies after 2-car crash
ATHOL — An Athol woman was killed and a Holyoke man was seriously injured in a two-car crash Wednesday night on Route 2.
Gail Peterson, 65, of Athol apparently lost control of her 1998 Dodge Stratus around 10:22 p.m., while traveling east, according to State Police. Her car crossed over into the westbound lane, striking the guardrail and landing in the westbound lane, before her vehicle was hit by a westbound 2001 Volvo driven by a 58-year-old Holyoke man, whose name was not released.
The Volvo struck Peterson’s car on the passenger side, which caused life-threatening injuries. She was taken by ambulance to Athol Hospital where she died. The other driver was also transported to Athol Hospital with serious injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Route 2 eastbound was closed until 2 a.m. to allow for rescue operations, investigation and clean up.
The crash is currently under investigation by Troop C of the Massachusetts State Police, State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section and troopers assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. Troopers were assisted on scene by Athol Police and Fire Departments and Orange Police.
