Plastics co. officical to meet with Deerfield selectmen
SOUTH DEERFIELD — Bayer MaterialScience, a worldwide producer of high-performance plastics, is once again appealing to the Deerfield Board of Selectmen to get a sewer hookup for its factory on the Whately line.
Bayer officials are scheduled to appear before the board at 7 tonight.
The company has met with the board several times since it originally requested a hookup in August. The hookup is part of a planned expansion.
The board has not decided whether it will allow a Whately business to tap into the town sewer.
Since its last meeting in November, the town has been investigating how much sewage treatment capacity Bayer would actually use if allowed to connect to South Deerfield’s sewer system.
The request is a controversial one with some residents and businesses along Routes 5 and 10 still relying on private septic systems because the town has chosen not to extend sewer lines to them.
