A dozen apply for 3-town EMS post

SOUTH DEERFIELD — Twelve people are vying to be the first director of the first inter-municipal emergency medical service in Franklin County.

On Wednesday, the deadline to submit an application to become the director of the South County EMS closed.

Over the next few weeks, a screening committee of the Board of Oversight will review applications, Sunderland Fire Chief and board member Robert Ahearn said.

The screening committee is made up of Deerfield EMS Director Matt Russo, Sunderland Selectman Thomas Fydenkevez, Deerfield EMS Assistant Director David Zamojski, Whately EMS Director Gary Stone and former Whately Fire Chief Randy Sibley.

“We’re going to start the review process,” Ahearn said. “I’m happy with the 12 candidates we have.”

The director would fully launch the new 24-hour, seven-day-a-week paramedic service. The new service is shared among the towns of Deerfield, Whately and Sunderland.

According to the job description, the board is looking for a candidate who is an experienced state-licensed EMT, with a preference for an intermediate EMT or paramedic and who is knowledgeable in Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services rules and regulations.

Three to five years of managerial experience is also a plus.

The director would be paid between $60,000 to $65,000 and would report to the Board of Oversight.

The goal is to have a director on board by March.

Meanwhile, the Board of Oversight has been making small changes to combine the three local departments, including bringing on per-diem staff to provide full coverage.
