Bulletin Board: Smith IL MVP

Turners Falls High School quarterback Malcolm Smith was named the Recorder Intercounty League Most Valuable Player during the Intercounty League Awards Banquet Sunday at the Newman Center on the campus of UMass/Amherst.

Smith set the area mark for touchdown passes in a season with 24 and helped lead the Indians to the WMass Division VI championship.

Easthampton High School’s Sam Garcia was named the Lineman of the Year.

Basketball

GMS boys’ win

Nate Haselton scored 12 points Monday afternoon to lead Greenfield Middle School to a 37-18 win over Mohawk Trail Middle School in a boys’ basketball game in Greenfield.

Jake Desreuisseau-Suhl finished with 6 points in the win.

GMS girls’ triumphant

Reagan Hickey scored 13 points for Greenfield Middle School during a 40-17 win over Mohawk in a girls’ basketball game Monday in Greenfield.

Samantha Smith added 11 points in the win.

Ashley Walker paced Mohawk with 8 points.

DRIVE Men’s League

Tyson Dowdy scored 24 points and Pat Colvin added 22 as Dunkin Donuts downed Bruso Computer Designs, 95-79, in a DRIVE Hoops Men’s Basketball League game over the weekend at Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield.

Matt Gibson led all scorers with 35 points in the loss.

• In other action, Angelo Thomas scored 24 points as Team DRIVE beat Noho, 82-64.

Brendan Kordana added 14 points in the win. Dylan Wickles led Noho with 12 points.

• Finally, Derek D’Mours scored 27 points and Pat Luptowski chipped in 19 as Taylor’s Tavern/Snow & Son’s Landscaping edged Shelburne Farm & Garden/Hilltown Tents, 87-79.

Luke Martin finished with 23 points in the loss. Ben Johnson added 17.

Preps

SBS wins

C’Quoya Haughton totaled 11 points, 10 rebounds and four steals to help Stoneleigh-Burnham School defeat Eagle Hill School, 43-27, in a River Valley Athletic League girls’ basketball game Monday in Hardwick.

Rosemary Ilang also had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Ieva Jasponyte contributed 9 points and 6 boards for the Owls (11-1 overall, 2-0 RVAL), who led 26-9 at halftime.

Eagle Hill fell to 5-1 overall (2-1 RVAL).

Football

Greyhounds tryouts

The Franklin County Greyhounds semi-pro football team will hold a Scouting Combine at Indoor Action Sports in Greenfield on Saturday from 2-4 p.m.

The combine is a public tryout. Anyone interested in trying out or spectating is welcome to attend.

Gymnastics

Tumbling Tiger results

The Greenfield YMCA Tumbling Tiger gymnastics team competed at the Funomenal Flippers Invitational over the weekend in Glastonbury, Conn. along with 14 teams and over 400 gymnasts.

The Level 8 team finished fourth with a score of 67.40. In the age 16 & over division, Nora Roscoe placed second on the beam with an 8.55, second on the floor with an 8.8 and also took fourth on the bar and third all-around. In ages 11-13 division action, Erin Laffond finished second on the vault (8.4), second on bars (8.4), second on the beam (8.3), third on the floor and second all-around (33.45).

The XCEL Silver team finished third with a score of 100.40. In the senior division, Karma Phillips won the vault (8.55) and finished tied for fourth on the bars, while Jordan Lamere placed fourth on the vault.

The Level 3 team placed ninth overall. In the age 9 division, Emma Paulin placed third on the vault (9.1) and fourth on the floor. Katia Usachev placed fourth on the beam in the age 11 division, and Ashley Taylor took fourth on the bars in the ages 6-7 division.

The Level 4 team placed 10th and was helped by Hillary Leeds, who placed fourth on the bars in the age 10 division.
