White, Doyle duel in PVIAC opener
If the six remaining races are anywhere near as good as this one, then it will be an outstanding year for local skiers.
Three-hundreths of a second separated John White of Mohawk Trail Regional High School and Sean Doyle of Frontier Regional School, with White prevailing for best overall time in the slalom during the PVIAC Alpine Ski League on Thursday evening at Berkshire East Ski Resort in Charlemont.
White put together a phenomenal run and stopped the clock in 32.98 seconds to set the standard. Then it was Doyle’s turn a few minutes later and he registered an equally stellar effort, only to wind up with a 33.01 finish, good for the overall runner-up spot and a 3.12-second win in the South Division individual standings.
The Warriors’ Luke Looman was the only other top-10 overall finisher, as he was 10th overall and eighth in the North. Teammate Liam Datres de la Blotier was 11th overall and ninth in the North.
Mohawk finished second in the team scoring at 152.24, exactly five seconds behind Longmeadow High School.
Doyle’s performance powered Frontier to a victory in the South Division team competition with a combined time of 192.40, just .56 better than runner-up Gateway Regional High School.
Four girls finished in the top 10 of the South Division, led by Alli Zera of Frontier with her second-place showing (28.75). She was 12th overall.
Caitlyn Wilkins of Mohawk came in third in the South and 15th overall (29.92), Jess Cobb of Frontier took eighth in the South (34.61), and Tyler Rice of Mohawk was ninth (34.82).
In the team standings, the Warriors finished second overall in 135.65 and the Red Hawks were third in 137.87. Amherst Regional High School won the division with a 131.93 total.
The second league race is scheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m.
