ORANGE — Spunky, healthy and 98 years old, L. Doris Olson has received the Boston Post Cane Award, which recognizes the oldest known resident in town.

Having moved to Orange from Greenfield when she was just 6, Olson has lived every day since then in the same home of her beloved town.

“I hold the end of the street down,” she said, smiling.

Her dedication to the town of Orange is something she says her mother ingrained in her when Olson was a student.

She was told about the importance of being part of a town and to be proud. Olson’s mother told her daughter she was here to help, to be there for people and to make where she lived an important place.

“If you don’t, who will?” Olson recalls her mother asking.

Those words had a big impact on her life. Olson worked hard at many companies like The Minute Tapioca Co. and Rodney Hunt Co. She also volunteered keeping the records and books for the Orange Cemetery Department. She retired from the position only a few years ago at age 95.

Olson received a number of recognitions throughout her life. One specific honor was the Unsung Heroine Award in 2009 from the Commission on the Status of Women. Although she prefers not to be “fussed over,” she is proud and appreciative of the acknowledgments.

Olson was met at a Wednesday ceremony this week by dozens of familiar faces to share in her moment. Selectmen’s Vice Chairman George Willard presented the Boston Post Cane to her as well as a certificate and pin.

“I know, I’m getting old and shaky and I need a cane,” said Olson as the room filled with laughter and applause.

Also present was state Rep. Denise Andrews, who gave Olson a citation from the State House of Representatives. An honor was additionally given from the Orange Library.
