Accident sends Whately teen to hospital

WHATELY — Slick roads sent a local teenager to the hospital on Monday morning, according to police.

“There was a pickup traveling on Haydenville Road, the roads were slushy and icy, it looks like the person caught the edge of the road, pulled their car off the road and crashed into a tree,” said Police Chief James Sevigne Jr.

The driver and sole occupant, an 18-year-old man from Whately, was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield following the accident reported at 7:10 a.m., Sevigne said.

“He is currently being treated for head and facial injuries,” Sevigne said Monday afternoon.

Sevigne said the driver was conscious when the chief arrived, but witnesses reported he had earlier lost consciousness.

The name and condition of the driver was not available Monday. Sevigne said he had not yet reached the driver’s family and did not want to release the man’s name until he had.
