ARTISANS OF WESTERN MASS. will host its first ever Local ARTery Artisan Demonstration Day in May. They are seeking a variety of artists and fine crafters who can demonstrate how they create their work or who can demonstrate a portion of the process. Demonstrations that include open flames, gas or flammable chemicals cannot be considered. Electricity will be available. Members of Artisans of Western Mass. will have priority acceptance. Nonmembers will be accepted based on uniqueness of their demonstration and space available in each genre. Accepted vendors will be allowed to set up a small display and sell examples of their finished products at Artisan Demonstration Day on May 3 at Yankee Candle Fitness Center Building, South Deerfield. SAWMILL RIVER ARTS GALLERY at the Montague Mill will host a community exhibit and sale of art work no larger than 6” x 6” and priced at $36 each in February. All kinds of art expressions by all ages welcome: cut up, glued, painted, drawn, any ideas as long as the artwork is ready to hang on the wall. ICE SCULPTURES: The Greenfield Recreation Department invites local artists to carve ice sculptures. Ice Sculpture Carving is part of Greenfield’s 92nd annual Winter Carnival, Jan. 31 to Feb. 2. Artists are asked to carve an ice sculpture with an original design as part of the Ice Walk of Winter Carnival. On site carving will take place Jan. 31. Sculptures will be on display throughout the weekend and longer. Artists will compete for a total of $1,000 in prize money distributed between first, second and third place. HISTORIC DEERFIELD INC. invites applications from college juniors and seniors to take part in an intensive, nine-week Summer Fellowship Program in History and Material Culture. Undergraduates who will be enrolled as either juniors or seniors as of Jan. 1, 2014 are eligible for seven openings in the program, which is designed for undergraduate students in American Studies, Architicture, Archeology, Art and Art History, Design, History, Material Culture, Preservation and Museum Studies. ANNUAL SLATE ROOF PRESS POETRY CHAPBOOK CONTEST: The winner becomes an active member of the press and will have his/her chapbook published by Slate Roof. They publish limited-edition, art-quality chapbooks with letterpress covers, beautiful books by an award-winning bookmaker. Winners must make a three-year commitment to the press, including monthly meetings in Greenfield, and share work responsibilities for many aspects of publishing.
