Montague Police Department: NO LARGE TRUCKS BY UNITY PARK:
On Monday night the Board Of Selectmen accepted the request from the Chief of Police, Chip Dodge, to ban large trucks over 10 Tons from traveling on First Street by Unity Park. The Chief requested that a 10 Ton Truck Ban sign be placed by Kostanski's Funeral Home and another at the intersection of First Street and L Street. This will prevent the larger trucks from passing by the park.
The new park has been attracting large crowds of people daily. When the skate park is complete even more people will be visiting the park area. Many cross the street to the bike path and river's edge. Having the large trucks pass through this area makes it very unsafe.
The Police Chief believes the large trucks are being routed down First Street by their GPS devices. Once they get to the end of First Street by the Town Hall, and the foot of the Gill/Montague Bridge, they have a difficult time pulling out onto the bridge. This ban will actually help them by keeping them on Third Street allowing them to make their turns at the larger Avenue A and Third Street intersection and vice versa.
This ban will take effect as soon as the Montague Highway Dept. is able to get the signs installed.
