Greenfield would be pulled westward in the new legislative redistricting plan, into the Berkshire district now represented by Rep. Paul Mark, D-Hancock, while more of a North Quabbin-oriented district is being created to the east.
The redistricting plan unveiled this week also moves Sen. Stanley Rosenberg’s Amherst-based district so that it now loses Ashfield, Buckland and Shelburne and picks up towns including Orange and Warwick, but splits Orange from Athol.
The proposal unveiled Tuesday and now scheduled for a legislative vote the week after next following a public comment period, manages to retain the same western Massachusetts representation overall, even though Berkshire County’s population has decreased between the 2000 and 2010 censuses.
“Redistricting is a process that involves balancing local and regional interests, coupled with a few guiding principles,” said Redistricting Committee Co-Chair Sen. Stanley Rosenberg, D-Amherst, pointing out 92 percent of the state’s residents would live in the same districts under the new proposal.
