GREENFIELD — The size of a municipal parking garage proposed for Olive Street has been reduced from four to three stories and from just under 300 spaces to just under 200, because the mayor and town’s economic development director say the town doesn’t have enough money to build a bigger one.
“We can’t count on MassWorks to fund the entire project,” said Economic Development Director Robert Pyers. “The state has limited funds, so we will probably end up having to borrow some of the money for the project.”
The town applied to the MassWorks Infrastructure Program for $9.3 million for the project last year and in November learned it did not receive the grant. The town plans to reapply, but doesn’t expect to receive the full amount, even if it gets something in the next round of funding, according to Mayor William Martin.
Martin and Pyers said the town will also begin looking aggressively at its current parking system. The town currently uses the revenue from parking throughout town for its operating costs.
