Buddies share a good read

Fifth-graders, kindergartners making key connection

GREENFIELD — Fifth-grader Teagan Cardaropoli needed to find a book that would pique the interest of a 5-year-old boy who likes to fish. Her solution was “Five Little Sharks Swimming in the Sea” by Steve Metzger.
Cardaropoli and the other students of Ann Valentine’s fifth-grade class at the Greenfield Middle School are participating in a reading program with Jenn Taggart’s kindergarten class at Federal Street School. Once a month, Valentine’s class goes to the elementary school to read with their kindergarten partners.
Cardaropoli’s partner is 5-year-old Joshua Garcia. Joshua wrote her a letter last month explaining that he likes turtles, fishing, the color green and was excited to meet his new reading partner.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Cardaropoli after first meeting Joshua. “We had to read books to the kids, and sometimes they wanted to read to us.”
