BERNARDSTON — A video of flood conditions played for a recent Board of Selectmen meeting may have brought back memories of Tropical Storm Irene, but it was actually just School Road after a run-of-the-mill rainstorm.
On Wednesday night, engineering consultant Jeff Collingwood of StanTec Inc. presented a preliminary plan to rebuild the road.
The problems with the road, which dead-ends at Bernardston Elementary School, are legion. Gary Wetherby, highway superintendent, said two school buses can’t pass each other under the best of conditions on the narrow road, which shrinks in the winter, as there’s no place to put the snow. It’s single storm drain feeds into a 6-inch pipe that’s “plugged and probably rotten through,” and the water that accumulates in the road turns into a sheet of ice in the winter.
