GREENFIELD — After noticing a lack of services in the area, speech pathologist Kelly Zraunig has opened her own practice in town, aimed at providing a flexible, after-school schedule for children.

“I’ve always wanted to do private practice work. When I had my son, I was sort of thinking about it eight years ago, and I really started my research then and have been just kind of wanting to do it ever since,” she said, “so, I kind of pulled the trigger.”

Zraunig Speech & Language Services is located at 278 Main St., Suite 201, where Zraunig works primarily with children after school hours. She also works full-time in the Greenfield Public School system with middle schoolers, and on-call during the weekends at Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

She hopes her private practice will help to fill a gap in speech services in the area.

“I think the flexibility piece is key, having the kids that don’t qualify in the schools be able to get the services somewhere else. The need for speech is there, outpatient or private practice,” Zraunig said. “At the hospital, I work with adults, so that’s an in-patient, adult population. In the schools, I primarily work with middle-school-age students, but I really like the little kids and I have three of my own, so I feel like the pediatric population is kind of my love.”

Speech pathologists evaluate and treat children and adults with speech and language issues, and Zraunig said she works with patients of all abilities.

“It’s really a wide range of kids, you might have a kiddo that just has a speech production problem but needs some additional support,” she said.

Zraunig accepts insurance plans and private pay, and offers after school and weekend appointments. She has worked in the field since 2006, when she began her career at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield.

“I want to work with families, I want to be able to support them and their time and be flexible with scheduling as best I can,” she said. “I’m just excited to support Greenfield and support our community with a service I think we need here.”
