Ashfield pipe organ to receive national award May 14

ASHFIELD — On Sunday, May 14, the Organ Historical Society will present the First Congregational Church’s George W. Reed 18-rank tracker organ, built in 1903, with the National Heritage Pipe Organ Award. A ceremony will take place during the 10 a.m. worship service at the First Congregational Church, 429 Main St. The public is welcome to attend this celebration, replete with music for organ, anthems by Pachelbel and Mendelssohn and hymns for congregation, choir and trumpet.

The historic organ is largely unchanged from its original construction. When it was moved to Ashfield in 1932, the old manual hand pump was disconnected and the first electric blower was installed. Today, the organ is considered to be historically significant by both organists and restoration experts alike. A contract for its restoration has been awarded to Messers Czelusniak et Dugal Inc. of Northampton. A capital campaign to pay for the restoration is under way. www.ashfielducc.org
