A Whately author has made USA Today’s bestseller list for her novel “The Taste of Air.”

“On Saturday, my publisher ran a BookBub ad announcing the sale, and the numbers went crazy. It was an amazing day,” said Gail Cleare, local resident and author of “The Taste of Air.” “It started to move steadily up in the ranks on Amazon as soon as the price went down.”

According to a news statement, Cleare’s novel, published last September, sold more than 5,000 e-books over a weekend last month.

“The Taste of Air” was number one on Amazon in its primary genre, contemporary women’s fiction, and made the top of the list for all fiction at Barnes and Noble before showing up on the USA Today list.

Cleare’s novel follows two sisters who discover their mother has been living a double life, complete with a second home, for more than 40 years. The book is inspired by a real experience Cleare had after her mother passed away.

When looking through old papers, Cleare discovered the name on her mother’s birth certificate didn’t match the one she had always called herself.

“This started me thinking,” Cleare said. “What if there was a lot more to this story? What if her secret was much, much bigger? I realized that I never really knew mom at all, as a person. It was disconcerting to think she had a whole side of her life that I had never even glimpsed. My father and all of her siblings are gone now, so there’s no one left to ask about it.”

Cleare has written for newspapers, magazines, and Fortune 500 companies, including AOL.
