TURNERS FALLS — After a fallout with her personal and professional partner in 2022 led to the closure of Deerfield’s Arts & Antiques on Routes 5 and 10, Danielle Marie began searching for “something that felt right.”

With Sweet Phoenix, her new antiques pop-up on Avenue A, she thinks she could be on the right track.

“The reason why it’s called ‘Sweet Phoenix’ is because it’s rising from the ashes,” Marie said. “I literally lost everything … so basically, I’m building everything up.”

Sweet Phoenix opened at 106 Avenue A, the former Swanson’s Fabrics, on Oct. 20. The pop-up shop features not only inventory left over from Marie’s former store, but work from artists on commission, guest vendors and other curated goods. Marie also plans to host maker-oriented classes in the shop’s back room.

Marie, who was a longtime emergency dispatcher in Greenfield, shifted her focus to selling antiques when she and Brickett Allis opened Arts & Antiques in December 2017. She then left the area after closing the shop in June 2022 and moved back to Greenfield in January with the hopes of reviving her passion.

“I’m pursuing my dream and what I’m really happy doing,” she said.

While holding pop-up shops had not necessarily been her vision, it was fortuitous that the space at 106 Avenue A had just become available around when Marie started looking to get back into selling antiques, she explained.

“I had to make a life decision … and I just took the plunge,” she continued. “[The space] was available for a couple months, and I said, ‘You know what? The timing’s perfect. The season is perfect.’ If you’re going to do a pop-up shop, do it during the holiday season, pretty much.”

The shop is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., but Marie intends to expand hours when the holidays get closer. She will also be updating the Sweet Phoenix Facebook and Instagram pages with information regarding classes that will be held at the pop-up. Offerings may include wreath making, mixed media art making, etc.

Marie said she hopes to relocate to a more permanent space in the area once her pop-up concludes in early January. Those who may have a fitting space can email her at daniellefaemarie@gmail.com or direct message her on either social media platform.

“When you own a shop, it’s not so much about selling things as it is being part of that community of people. It’s like a family,” she expressed. “It’s the vendors and the customers. You see people every day and you make relationships with them, and I can tell you that it’s been so nice here.”
