GREENFIELD — Recreational marijuana facilities won’t be opening in Greenfield — at least for the time being.

Town Council approved a temporary moratorium on recreational marijuana establishments during its meeting Wednesday night, which will remain in effect until zoning regulations governing such facilities can be established.

“What it allows is for the town to have better control over where they’re sited,” council President Brickett Allis said. “Without this moratorium, they could be sited next to a school, next to a church, next to a park.”

Allis said the town’s Planning Department, Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals will create the zoning regulations. Once that happens, the moratorium will no longer be in effect.
