SHELBURNE — Long-time veterinarian Victoria Howell has recently retired. But Dr. Timothy Galusha of Granby bought her practice and has started seeing dogs and cats at 1116 Mohawk Trail clinic.

The practice is now called Trailside Veterinary Services and it will offer some high-technology medical services, such as ultrasound and digital X-rays, in addition to standard medical treatment for animals.

Galusha, who grew up on a farm, has been a “mixed animal” doctor for the past 17 years at the Mill Valley Veterinary Clinic in Belchertown. “I found this practice and fell in love with it,” he said.

“We’ll be doing (only) dogs and cats now,” Galusha said, “I’m really excited to be able to bring in a lot more equipment to help the animals out,” he said.

The technologies available for pet owners will include a new dental unit, so that pets will be able to get teeth cleanings and tooth extractions. The office will have a new anesthesia monitor, and ventilator and a heated surgery table, to keep animals warm as their temperature drops during surgery.

“I’m excited to be able to offer a lot more services, although I would hope the pets don’t need them,” said Galusha.

An ultrasound specialist will come by appointment to the office to perform scans using high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside the body and diagnose diseases, including cancer. “An ultrasound specialist can also give you an internal medicine consultation,” said Galusha.

Galusha said offering these services in Shelburne will save people travel time.

The veterinarian’s office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., open Thursday until 6 p.m. and open Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m. until noon. The phone number is 413-625-6034.

Also, Galusha and some staff members will be at Moonlight Magic tonight, Nov. 24, in Shelburne Falls.
