Deerfield Recreation Department will offer Mad Science Engineering Explorers: Design and build skyscrapers and bridges, construct a geodesic dome, design simple machines using pulleys screws and levers.

Another summer offering will be “Let’s Gogh Art — Splish Splash Art Blast.” Learn about the fascinating world of sea creatures by designing beach hats, sunglasses and T-shirts. Historic Deerfield: The study of historic buildings to pinpoint the initial period of construction and the methods and materials available to determine the evolution of that structure is the focus of the upcoming symposium, Buildings Archaeology: An Integrated Approach to Understanding Historic Structures, at Historic Deerfield. Geared toward both professionals practicing in all aspects of the preservation field as well as owners of historic structures, the symposium will be Saturday, July 16 from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Deerfield Community Center, 16 Memorial Street, Deerfield. The symposium will feature lectures and presentations from notable speakers on the topic of building archaeology. GriefShare grief recovery support group: Meets at Living Waters Assembly of God 450 Davis St, Greenfield every Tuesday at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. GriefShare features nationally recognized experts on grief recovery topics. Baystate Franklin Medical Center is offering three new support groups for individuals with special needs in our community. All three groups are free; advance registration is not necessary:

The Caregiver Support Group was formed to support caregivers in the emotionally and physically taxing role of taking care of loved ones who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to take care of themselves. All caregivers and family members are welcome. The group meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, 2 to 3 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Conference Room, 48 Sanderson St. (BFMC’s Medical Office Building). The second new group, the Stroke Support Group takes place the third Tuesday of the month, 10 to 11 a.m., Conference Room C. The next meeting will take place Tuesday, July 18. Light refreshments available. Diane Stephan, RN, BSN, Emergency Department nurse educator and stroke coordinator at BFMC, will facilitate the group. The goals of the new support group are to promote an atmosphere of caring and cooperation, promote new goals and friendships for stroke survivors and their families and caregivers, and to renew hope and encourage independence. All stroke survivors, their family members and caregivers are welcome. Newly formed this winter, the Amputee Support Group has a goal of assisting amputees in their daily lives by offering them the opportunity to share ideas and support each other. Sohail Waien, MD, BFMC hospitalist, facilitates this group. The Amputee Support Group generally meets the third Thursday of the month, 5 to 6:30 p.m., in the BFMC Conference Rooms, off the main entrance. As there are exceptions to the schedule, attendees should request a detailed schedule. The next meeting will take place Thursday, July 28 (fourth Thursday) in Conference Room C.
