March/April Classes: Registration is now open for March/April classes. Classes for youth include swimming and gymnastics lessons, basketball skills (classes for ages 4 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12), active games physical education class and healthy kids. Classes for adults include water fitness, water therapy, strength training, diabetic care, diabetic prevention program and the annual lifeguard training course. Healthy Luncheon: On Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. the YMCA is providing a free soup and salad lunch. At the luncheon, Carol Pedigree will be introducing her “Conscious Breathing” course where she teaches relaxation/breathing techniques. Middle School Basketball: The YMCA middle school basketball league is open to boys and girls in grades 5 to 8 who want to further develop skills and play more competitively. Players will participate in basketball workouts where they will fine tune fundamentals and learn advanced basketball techniques and offenses. Begins today and runs for six weeks. Practice is on Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. and scrimmages on Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. Potential games on Sundays with other YMCAs, times to be determined. Lifeguard Training Course: Once a year, the YMCA provides a Red Cross lifeguard training course. This certificate provides excellent employment opportunities at indoor and outdoor swimming pools and lakes. Must be at least 15 years old and a strong swimmer. The course is 36 hours and includes first aid and CPR certificates. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. beginning March 6. There will be an information meeting and swim evaluation today at 6:30 p.m. The fee is $350 for Y members and $385 for nonmembers. Limited enrollment. Call 773-3646, ext. 427, to learn more.

Preseason Golf Prep: Get ready for golf season with the Y and the Northfield Golf Club. This class provides golfers with balance and stretch techniques, core stability and movement prep to help with the upcoming golf season. Participants will leave with enhanced knowledge of the fundamentals of golf and the necessary skills for optimum performance. Class will be at the YMCA from 1 to 2 p.m. on March 1, 8, 15 and 22 with Shane Foster. Then, join Foster at Northfield Golf Club on their new short game practice area for two additional classes (dates to be determined.) Each golfer will also receive two rounds of nine holes. Y Full-day Preschool Openings: The Y has a few mid-year openings for its full-day preschool. There are two classrooms: one for 3 to 4 year olds and another for 4 to 5 year olds. There are two day (Tuesday and Thursday) and five day options available. The students get to use the gym, pool and gymnastics center for weekly physical education. options.
