GREENFIELD — State police are continuing to investigate a fatal crash involving a Greenfield police cruiser that claimed the life of a 29-year-old New Hampshire man in October 2017.

First Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Steven Gagne said the DA’s office hopes to receive an accident report from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) later this month.

The Oct. 1 crash claimed the life of James Arcellana, 29, of New Hampshire.

Arcellana was driving a Subaru west on Sanderson Street when he attempted to cross High Street, resulting in a collision between his vehicle and a southbound Greenfield cruiser.

Arcellana and a passenger of the Subaru were treated at nearby Baystate Franklin Medical Center and later at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for their injuries.

The Greenfield police officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, and later released.

Neither the District Attorney’s Office nor the Greenfield Police Department have released the officer’s name.

Greenfield Police Chief Robert Haigh said his department will open an internal investigation based on the results of the accident reconstruction report.

“We’re hopeful to get the results back as soon as possible, and we’re unfortunately in the holding pattern as everyone else,” he said.
