TURNERS FALLS — Stroll into Scottys at 66 Unity St. sometime soon and you may see Bobbi Marguet, just as you have for the past 15 years. She might be behind the counter, helping a customer or greeting a delivery truck driver. The only difference is that she won’t be doing so as the store’s owner.

Marguet and her husband, Jon, sold the business to Liana Pleasant and husband Richard Pervere, who took ownership on Jan. 2.

“I have 11 grandkids now and, you know, life has changed in a big way,” said Marguet, who continues to help out at the store for the time being. “I didn’t have the energy to put into the store what it deserved, [but Pleasant] does. So it was the perfect time, she’s the perfect person. I couldn’t have asked for anybody better to step in.”

Pleasant was most recently employed by the Gill-Montague Regional School District, running the Great Falls Middle School and Turners Falls High School food service program, while also working at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Gill.

“I’ve sort of always kept in the back of my mind that I may want to do my own thing at some point, and this community is where I grew up,” she said on Wednesday. “I felt really connected to it and so when I saw on social media [about a year ago] that Bobbi and Jon were interested in finding new owners, we came and met with them, after looking at a few other things along the way, and this felt right.”

Pleasant said Scottys will continue to operate as the community staple it has become, offering breakfast and lunch food Monday through Friday as well as snacks and lottery tickets. She said she hopes to add breakfast and lunch service on Saturdays and eventually accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

“It’s quite bustling in here. We love that. I love to be busy,” Pleasant said. “The customers here are one of a kind, for sure. Everybody wants to introduce themselves — so friendly. They really have been great.”

She said she and her husband, who works at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, grew up in Turners Falls and lived in other locations before settling in Millers Falls. Pleasant said she worked at Turners Falls Pizza House for several years.

The Marguets, who live in Gill, bought Scottys from Sharon Lamonakis when Bobbi was working as a computer programmer and wanted a career change.

“It’s been Scottys since time began, I think,” she joked. “It was amazing. I loved it. I loved it. I shut down once, six weeks during COVID, and jumped back in. We have the best customers in the world up here.”

The phone number to Scottys is 413-863-9634. The business also maintains a Facebook page.
