NORTHFIELD — What was initially going to be a solo piano concert at the Trinitarian Congregational Church has blossomed into a star-studded, “musical, magical afternoon,” organizer Leslie Kellogg announced.

The benefit concert, headlined by pianist Dan Kennedy, will take place Sunday at 2 p.m. He is joined by jazz and blues icon Samirah Evans, who was somewhat of a surprise addition to the lineup.

Kennedy, who was originally just going to play a solo piano set on Sunday, said this chance to perform is “coming for [him] at a unique place in [his] career.” He recalled having survived a car accident last year that made him re-evaluate a variety of things, including how frequently he surrounds himself with others.

“I really wanted to open it up and include tons of people, so when Leslie called me, I really jumped at the opportunity,” he explained.

Kennedy and Evans, who has shared the stage with James Brown, B.B. King and others, will be supported by a wide array of musicians, including Kennedy’s son, Caleb Kennedy, who will be traveling from Boston to drum.

“It’s not about me,” Kennedy said. “It’s about the church community and the music community.”

“I think it’s going to be a fabulous concert,” Kellogg said.

Energy will be high at the concert, Kellogg said, as it’s intended to be “a chance to laugh and clap and dance in the aisles.” In addition to Kennedy’s New Age originals and Evans’ soulful tunes, those who attend can expect some holiday music infused into the setlist.

“We could hear songs from any of his seven albums, and even a few songs to get us ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas,” Kellogg wrote of Kennedy in her event announcement. “Dan’s music makes it so easy to visualize entire scenes. His songwriting is only matched by his talented mastery of his instrument.”

In addition to benefiting a variety of church missions through suggested donations of $10 to $20 per person, the event will welcome donations of nonperishable food items. Many of the church’s missions involve combating food insecurity, Kellogg explained.
