Newspapers in Education
Investing
in the future
The goal of The Recorder and our NIE program is to reinforce a
lifetime reading habit in students by engaging them with a timely,
relevant text - our local newspaper.
Currently we place 1,300 copies per week into 24 different classroom
settings ranging from elementary to college.
The Recorder is a great resource for students, with items of interest
about their towns, their streets, their schools, their neighbors,
their families. Learning to take advantage of the newspaper as a
resource builds awareness of our community and also of the larger
community that is our nation and the world.
Students exercise and build their reading ability, as well as developing
critical thinking skills and interpretive skills. They grow in awareness
of current events and of different viewpoints. All these are activities
and exercises which will serve them well throughout their lives.
Through our relationships with USA Weekend magazine and NewsCurrents
we offer Teacher's Guides and other teaching tools.
