NEW SALEM — The New Salem General Store and the land it sits on are for sale.

The owners, husband and wife Rick and Lori Oliver, put the business and real estate on the market for $520,000 about a month ago, after deciding it is time for a change. But the store is not going out of business and the Olivers plan keep everything the same until it sells.

“I’ve done this for 22 years and I want to do something different,” he said on Wednesday. “And I’ve done as much as I can and it’s time for a new generation.”

The general store opened in January 1996, after buying a run-down business at 410 Daniel Shays Highway, cleaning it up and changing the name. The store’s inventory includes home-cooked breakfasts, a full-service deli, baked goods, Dean’s Beans coffee, beer and wine. There are also books, lottery tickets and an ATM. It is open seven days a week.

Rick Oliver said he has no regrets about running the business, but he looks forward to moving on.

“I’d keep doing it more, but my feet hurt,” he said with humor in his voice.

Rick said he plans to work in sales, hopefully in the beer industry, as he has a passion for quality brews.

“There’s a lot of new micros opening up — hopefully I can help someone out,” he said.

Oliver said the general store has survived for 22 years and powered through a recession, thanks to loyal customers.

“It’s been a lot of fun — the town has been wonderful,” he said. “We live here and have loved every minute of it. … We’re not slowing down at all.”

He said he predicts it will be two years before the business and real estate sell.
