ATHOL — Police and fire departments from Athol and Erving responded to a structure fire in Athol at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Neighboring residents gathered outside their homes as units responded to the fire, watching billowing smoke pour out of the 446 Pequoig Ave. residence.

Athol Police directed onlookers to move away from the home as smoke continued to engulf the scene.

Fire units from the two towns responded after receiving a call from a neighbor who noticed smoke coming from the home. Firefighters battled the blaze coming from the second story of the home, spraying water into the upstairs windows.

Athol Police Chief Russell Kleber said no injuries were reported as of 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Kleber said the animal control officer was called for several animals that were in the house at the time of the fire, adding that those they knew of in the house were accounted for.

Residences in the area of the fire and around Main Street lost power for about an hour during the action, with power restored around 2 p.m. It is not know whether the residence was a one- or two-family home as of 2:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
