SOUTH DEERFIELD — Mount Sugarloaf’s access road from Sugarloaf Street was temporarily closed for a few days for road repairs.

A backhoe could be seen exiting the park shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday. And Sam Jurkowski, the state park’s superintendent, said cars will be able to drive to the top starting Wednesday.

“There was a damaged culvert on the road. They’re just doing patch work,” Jurkowski explained. A sign posted at the bottom alerted drivers that vehicle access was closed for two days, Monday and Tuesday.

But that didn’t stop many from hiking to the top on foot. The parking lot was nearly overflowing Tuesday, as temperatures reached the mid-80s for much of the day.

Anyone with questions is encouraged to call the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s local office at 413-665-2928.
