ATHOL — The McDonald’s location at 100 Brookside Road in Athol is open during construction.

Michael Dube, an operations supervisor whose job purview included the Athol restaurant until about five months ago, said the renovation work is part of a nationwide McDonald’s initiative to remodel all restaurants by 2021. He said all McDonald’s locations will be fitted with a more modern design.

The Athol location’s PlayPlace is gone, but Dube did not know if this is permanent. He said the play areas, once a McDonald’s fixture, are expensive to maintain and come with a great deal of liability.

Dube said the general contractor is from Connecticut and has hired sub-contractors. Equipment and vehicles from Graves Concrete, of Templeton, and Haber Brothers Inc., of South Hadley, could be seen in the parking lot on Monday.

Dube said the Athol restaurant will look similar to the one in Gardner and the one on the Mohawk Trail in Greenfield.

He said he still oversees certain restaurants for Gomez Enterprises, a franchise company owned by George Gomez, but the company owner’s son is now the operations supervisor for the Athol restaurant.

Dube said Gomez Enterprises also owns McDonald’s restaurants in the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside, in Northampton, in Easthampton and the two in Greenfield.
