GREENFIELD — When Adam Howe heard the repeated sound of a vehicle’s horn outside the Department of Public Works garage Wednesday morning, his initial thought was that a resident might have a grievance. But he stepped outside to see something different entirely.

Parked outside was a black and gold Travel Kuz bus, with a very special passenger.

“Santa got off the bus and gave us presents,” explained Howe, assistant mechanic at the Greenfield DPW.

According to Pam Reipold, co-owner of F.M. Kuzmeskus, Inc. and Travel Kuz bus companies, the same sight could be seen at the Montague, Northfield and Bernardston DPWs Wednesday, as Santa and his elves (who were in fact school bus drivers with F.M. Kuzmeskus) delivered gift bags. The bags contained candy, baked goods made by the bus drivers and other F.M. Kuzmeskus staff, and thank you cards.

“It’s one little way we can say ‘Thank you’ to all of the fine people who take such good care of the roads we travel each day,” Reipold. “We are super fortunate to have such a great relationship with our road crews. They do a super job and we really do appreciate them.”

The gesture didn’t go unnoticed by DPW workers.

“It was very unexpected,” Howe said with a laugh. “I wasn’t expecting to see Santa today!”
