GREENFIELD — A lit cigarette thrown from a car window led police to discover 67 bags of suspected heroin during a traffic stop Thursday night.

According to a news release from the Greenfield Police Department, Nathan Young, 31, of Shutesbury and Jennifer M. Tatro, 28, of Greenfield, were arrested on drug charges after officer Jay Butynski observed Young, who was the passenger in a car in front of him, throw a lit cigarette out the window.

According to a report written by Butynski, he stopped the vehicle on Main Street by Athens Pizza, and officers Corey Greene and Felix Ramos arrived to assist. After a brief investigation, Greene located suspected heroin and a user’s kit on Young, according to the release. The driver, identified as Tatro, told Butynski that she had heroin in her wallet and showed the officer where it was.

In total, 67 bags of suspected heroin were seized, according to police.

Young was charged with possession of a Class A drug, and Tatro with possession with intent to distribute. Both were charged with conspiracy to violate drug laws. Young was also charged with failing to wear a seatbelt and littering from a motor vehicle.

Young’s bail was set at $100 and Tatro’s was set at $200.
