GREENFIELD — Driving on High Street toward downtown, Jody Bagdonas of Turners Falls saw a tractor-trailer coming down Maple Street and into the intersection Wednesday about 10 a.m.

She decided to step on the gas, trying to pull out of the intersection, but the tractor-trailer hit into the back of her GMC Yukon SUV. The momentum then carried her SUV into an incoming Toyota Corolla, Bagdonas explained. That ricocheted the vehicle into a bank, the elevated sidewalk on High Street, and vaulted the Yukon over a lawn, between two large trees and into an old fence.

“I was scared to death and all I saw was that big tree,” Bagdonas said, who was returning from dropping her daughter off at school in Turners Falls. “I got lucky that when I hit that bank, this is where I ended up.”

Bagdonas, came away with no significant injuries and did not go to the hospital, despite significant damage to her truck and taking down a few small trees, The driver of the Corolla, who was hit on the driver’s side door, was brought to the hospital because of neck pain.

“Thankfully no one was seriously injured,” Greenfield Police Sgt. Todd Dodge said. “This intersection has posed challenges for us over the years.”

The driver of the tractor-trailer did not go to the hospital and was issued a citation by Greenfield Police Department for failure to start.
