GREENFIELD — Hairdresser Marge Fisher has gone from renting a booth to renting an entire hair salon.

The Greenfield resident opened Ufora Salon at 30 Chapman St. on March 15 and brought with her all the customers she had accumulated while working out of The Hair Studio on Main Street for five years.

Speaking inside her 460-square-foot business, which formerly housed Dapper Dan’s Barber Shop, Fisher said she’s added 16 new clients since the move. She rents from Shelby Smith, owner of Smitty’s Pub at 26 Chapman St.

Fisher had intended to be closed Wednesdays and Sundays but, due to a steady flow of business, has decided to stay open on Sundays that aren’t holidays.

“It’s hard, but I’ve been super busy. I mean, I’m here six days a week now,” she said while sweeping the floor to collect hair cut from her most recent customer.

“I love my job. I love my clients. I have not had one day where I didn’t want to come to work, if that tells you anything,” Fisher said. “It’s the social aspect. COVID is what really actually made me realize it, though. When the state shut down, and we were not essential, I was losing my mind. I started realizing what depression was.

“I never realized how much interaction I have in a day,” she added.

Fisher said her boyfriend encouraged her to open her own salon and came up with its unique name, as Euphoria was taken several times over.

“If it wasn’t for him … I wouldn’t be doing this,” she said. “Booth-renting is very easy. You pay your rent, you go to work. No overhead. Even with doing this as long as I’ve done it, in the middle of a pandemic I was scared to death — more rent, I have an electric bill now.”

Fisher is currently the only person working in the space, though she may opt in the future to rent out a spare station, possibly to an impending Franklin County Technical School graduate, herself being a 1994 graduate of Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School in Northampton.

She said she requires customers to wear masks, as local COVID-19 case numbers are rising.

Ufora Salon has a Facebook page and the phone number is 413-522-7173. Hours will vary, but will resemble 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the other days the salon is open.
