GREENFIELD — The town is considering a moratorium on recreational marijuana facilities until a framework for regulating such establishments can be developed.
“We currently don’t have any zoning ordinances that establish where it can be done, how it can be done, who can do it. We don’t have anything on the books,” Town Council President Brickett Allis said during a recent Committee Chairs meeting.
The moratorium would temporarily prohibit recreational marijuana facilities in town until an ordinance governing such establishments is written and in the town’s books.
This week, Town Council voted to formally initiate the zoning change process, which is required for the moratorium. Allis said the town considered a similar moratorium after medical marijuana was legalized in 2013.
“The idea would be to develop an ordinance that is compliant with state law, as soon as we have a state law,” Mayor William Martin said.
“(The state is) behind the eight ball on this, and I think this is a way to protect ourselves,” Precinct 8 Councilor Ashli Stempel said during this week’s council meeting.
