Singer-songwriter Grant Maloy Smith will perform at Mocha Maya's in Shelburne Falls on Saturday at 8 p.m. His new album, “Dust Bowl — American Stories," was just released. The album was inspired by the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.

The Nashville, Tenn. recording artist lives in New England and sings about the southern plains.

Smith will include songs from his new album in is performance at Mocha Maya’s, 47 Bridge St.

The album was inspired by a series of devastating dust storms that blanketed huge areas of several states, particularly Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, during the 1930s. The storms decimated crops and livestock, and caused an estimated 2 million people to migrate to other parts of the country in search of employment.

“There were many factors that led to the Dust Bowl, but a seemingly-endless drought, combined with over-farming and poor land management, stressed the earth and contributed to one of the worst natural disasters of the 20th century,” said Maloy Smith. “Those same topics resonate today.

“My main goal in writing this album was to capture the hardy nature of people who endured so much, set against the backdrop of the real-life drama of the Dust Bowl,” Maloy Smith said. “My album is a cautionary tale, but it’s also about the triumph of the human spirit in the face of great adversity.”
