SHELBURNE — The torch (and the liquor license) have been passed from Underdogs Lounge to a future Mexican/American restaurant at 10 Bridge St. — to be called Cantina LaVida.

“It will be more restaurant than tavern,” Elizabeth Boltz told the Selectboard Monday night, at a public hearing for a liquor license transfer. Boltz and her sister, Ann, are nieces of the Underdog Lounge’s chef and co-owner, Margaret Fitzpatrick.

Boltz described the menu as “Mexican-American fusion.” She said she and her sister have worked in restaurants in New York City and in Cincinnati. Their aunt and her spouse, co-owner Tanya Bryant, have closed Underdogs and are happy to see the restaurant staying in the family.

“The next generation is taking over,” said Bryant. “We’re passing the torch. We’re thrilled they’ll be taking over this space.”

During the warmer seasons, the new restaurant will serve lunch and dinners from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; in the winter, it will serve dinners only. There will be live music on the weekends.

The Selectboard granted the new restaurateurs a full liquor license. The restaurant is to have a “soft” opening in late April and be open by early May.
