ATHOL — A state Department of Fire Services spokeswoman said the 275 Hapgood St. fire that killed several animals and sent five people to the hospital Tuesday started in a second-floor living room.
“There were rumors (Tuesday) that there was a ‘meth lab’ in the basement that were unfounded,” Jennifer Mieth said in an email.
Firefighters at the scene had believed eight people to have been sent to the hospital.
She said the fire’s cause remains undetermined because fire crews had to use an excavator in their efforts to control the blaze. Mieth did not know the status of the people taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The fire is being investigated by the Athol fire and police departments and State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
The call came in at 1:11 p.m. Tuesday regarding a multi-family home fire at the corner of Hapgood and Cottage streets. The blaze required dozens of firefighters from at least five departments. The fire was declared under control shortly before 4 p.m. Pete Lyman Excavating was on the scene dismantling part of the house at 8:15 p.m.
