Bulletin board: Pioneer alum Scott McDonough has big weekend for UMass Dartmouth men’s track & field team

It was another big weekend for Scott McDonough, as the Pioneer Valley Regional alum captured first place in the long jump for the UMass-Dartmouth men’s track & field team at the Tufts Sunshine Classic at the Ellis Oval in Somerville.

McDonough’s top leap of 22 feet, 6½ inches (6.87 meters) put him first overall in the field for the Corsairs. He was also fourth in the triple jump, posting a top performance of 40-9½ (12.73 meters).

The Corsairs finished third as a team on Saturday (132 points) behind the host Jumbos (273 points) and Bridgewater State (151 points). Next up is the Little East Conference Championships, scheduled for this Saturday at the UMass Dartmouth Track and Field Complex.

Scoville honored at Westfield State

Westfield State junior Stephanie Scoville, of Northfield, has been named as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference’s pitcher of the week for the third time this season.

Scoville was tabbed for the week ending April 23 after back-to-back complete game wins against conference foes. She also earned the weekly honor on March 13 and March 27.

On Saturday, Scoville went the distance to earn the win in a nine-inning, 3-2 victory over Salem State, allowing 10 hits but just one earned run while striking out five, to get her 10th win of the season. Scoville has a 10-2 record this season with two saves and a 2.94 earned run average. She ranks second in the league in wins and is in the top five in ERA, strikeouts and saves.

The Owls are 21-9 overall and 9-1 in the MASCAC.

Marin collects pair of top 3 finishes

Sophomore Vicky Marin (Greenfield) collected two top-three finishes in the high jump (1.57m) and long jump (4.99m) as the Westfield State women’s track & field team took sixth place at the Trinity College Invitational in Hartford on Saturday.

Marin also posted a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (15.99) and sixth in the triple jump (10.83m). 

Youth softball

GGSL results

It was a busy opening day for the Greenfield Girls Softball League, which kicked off its 2023 campaign with a parade and first batch of games at Murphy Park Saturday.

Jaelyn Boliski, Lexi Hawkins and Lindsey Hawkins combined for 10 strikeouts in the circle as Triton Automotive took a 13-4 win over Pipione’s in a Ponytails Division contest.

Lenyx White and Stella Call each went 2-for-3 for Triton.

For Pipione’s, Zoey Thurber went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Sammi Suhl threw a great game with six strikeouts.

• Elsewhere, Charley Deane went 4-for-4 with a run and Brady Deane was 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lift Gilmore & Farrell to a 5-0 win over Freedom Credit Union in Junior Division play.

Tianna Valdez and Lyla Burek were both 3-for-4 with a run scored.

• In other action, Emylise Perez smacked the game-winning hit in the bottom of the fifth to lift Pristine Orientals past the Elks Club, 7-6.

Savannah Thomas, Mia Beckwith and Hayden Sadler had three hits apiece for Pristine, while the Elks were paced by Parker Gebo-Lutenegger (three hits) and Paisley Beck (hit).

• In Lil Nippers Division play, Bailey Sibley, Penelope Gioules and Ava Martin roped three hits apiece to help Precision Driving School to a 5-3 win over Franklin First Credit Union.

Ellie McIntyre added two hits for Precision, while Franklin First was paced offensively by Riley Vallendingham, Dani Zraunig and Shaye Tyler with four hits each. Evelyn Eldridge had three hits for Franklin First.

• In action played Monday night, Sammie Suhl and Alaina Toothaker each had a hit and an RBI to help Pipione’s edge Camelot Carpet Cleaners, 8-5.

Camelot’s Maddy Ross finished with two hits and two RBIs and Ivy Bettencourt also had a hit and drove in a pair.

Golf

KMP Shootout

Bob Betsold and Jason Kelton fired a low gross of 66 to top the field at the KMP Shootout at the Country Club of Greenfield on Saturday.

Kelton and Pat McGuire were second with a 69, while Tom Herzig and Hector Diaz had the low net (64), followed in second by Betsold and McGuire (65).

Deerfield results

The Deerfield Academy softball team picked up a key win over the weekend, edging Taft School, 5-4, in NEPSAC action on Saturday.

Elsewhere, the baseball team split a doubleheader with Dexter Southfield, capturing a 1-0 win while suffering a 6-5 loss.

The girls tennis team took down Exeter, 7-2, while the boys lacrosse team (11-1 loss to Taft), girls lacrosse team (18-13 loss to Taft), boys tennis team (6-1 loss to Andover) and boys rowing team (loss to Brunswick) also competed.

The DA ultimate team went 1-2 in a play day over the weekend, defeating Phillips Andover (13-4) while losing to Northampton (13-5) and NMH (13-8).

Cornhole

Hitchcock Brewing results

The team of Andrew Barisano and Jeremy Mankowsky captured first place in the weekly Hitchcock Brewing Company cornhole tournament on Sunday in Bernardston.

Second place went to the duo of Andrew and Norm LaCoy.
