Local bulletin: Greenfield's Gianna Conte named MASCAC Pitcher of the Week at Westfield State

Westfield State University’s Gianna Conte was dealing in the circle this past week.

Conte, a Greenfield High School alum, made six pitching appearances for the Owls on a spring trip in Naples, Fla., finishing up with a 3-1 record. Conte had a 3.55 ERA over 22 innings, striking out nine while giving up just 24 hits. Three of Conte’s appearances were starts.

For that effort, she was named the MASCAC Pitcher of the Week. Conte and Westfield State are back in action Wednesday, going on the road to face Skidmore. 

Running

Holyoke St. Patrick’s Road Race

The Holyoke St. Patrick’s Road Race took place on Saturday, with a number of locals competing.

Greenfield’s Amy O’Sullivan was the third female to cross the finish line, completing the 10-kilometer course in a time of 37 minutes, 33.60 seconds. 

Montague’s Michael Keebler was the 10th overall finisher (33:17.74), Greenfield’s Mark Rabasco placed 18th (34.24.20) while Greenfield’s Luke Nugent took 65th (38:43.21). 

Greenfield’s Audrey Boraski placed 57th on the female side (45:40.73) and Greenfield’s Elizabeth Millner came in 104th (49:02.55).

Hall of Fame Senior All-Star Game

Four locals were selected to compete in the 2024 Western Massachusetts Senior All-Star Games at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield on Thursday. 

Athol’s Angel Castillo, Mahar’s Will Barnes and Pioneer’s Josh Wood were selected to play in the Class C and D Boys game, which is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. All three helped their respective teams reach the state tournament, with Barnes and Wood both getting to the Div. 5 final four. The three locals will play together on Team 2. 

Franklin Tech’s Lea Chapman, who helped the Eagles reach the Div. 5 Round of 16 in the state tournament, was selected to play in the girls game, which takes selections from all four Western Mass. divisions. Chapman will play for Team 1. The girls game is scheduled for 7 p.m. 

Tickets will be available the night of the event. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for students. One ticket is good for all three games.
