Bulletin Board: Turners’ Sak a standout in boys’ basketball semifinal

Jake Sak scored 18 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as Turners came from behind late to capture a wild 52-49 win over West Springfield in the semifinals of the grades 7 and 8 Suburban League NIT Division Tournament on Thursday.

Sak sank 12 of his 16 free throws to help Turners, which held a 21-16 lead at halftime before West Springfield took an advantage in the second half.

Jake Dodge poured in 18 points for Turners in the win, while the tandem of Dylan McLaughlin and Brendan Driscoll played well defensively.

Turners advanced to Saturday’s NIT finals, which is scheduled to be played at Westfield Middle School against an opponent TBD (6 p.m.).

Bovio scores ace at East Mountain

Conway’s Harry Bovio had quite a day on the links Wednesday.

Using a 3-wood on the par 3 10th hole at East Mountain Country Club in Westfield, Bovio drilled a hole-in-one. The seasonal weather made for the perfect backdrop to the ace, which was witnessed by Jay Frost, Dan O’Connell and Chuck O’Connell.

GML Registrations

Registrations for the Greenfield Minor League will take place this weekend at the Greenfield Police Station.

Registrations will take place on Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The league is also introducing 50/70 baseball this season.

Babe Ruth Registrations

Eight signup sessions for Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball will kick off next week.

Players ages 12 to 15 as of April 30 can register at one of the following dates from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Registration fee is $175 for the season. After raffle ticket sales, $75 will be reimbursed.

Soccer

Instructional course for prospective officials

The local scholastic soccer officials association will conduct an instructional course for new referees during April and May. Members of the Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association referee scholastic games of all levels in Hampshire and Franklin counties and in Athol during fall.

Members must be 18 years of age or older and pass a national background check. The instructional course includes five classes on weekday evenings, a rules test, and field training. The cost of the course is $50. Contact Artie Burke at 863-2452 or AEBurke11@verizon.net for more information.

GGSL Registrations

Registration for the Greenfield Girls’ Softball League is set for this Saturday as well as March 18 at the Greenfield Elks Club on 2 Church St.

Registration will be open from 9 to 11 a.m., and the league is open to all girls in Franklin County age 5 to 16.
