Bulletin Board: Gibson leads Wave over Athol in middle-school hoops

Sam Gibson scored 15 points and Greenfield Middle School beat Athol Middle School, 64-17, Tuesday in a boys’ basketball game.

Drew Conant added 12 points and David Carey finished with 10. Ryan Cote added 7 and Ryan Pulizari, Maverick Ward and Bob Provost each played well defensively.

Greenfield improved to 11-1.

Curling

Rodgers at Junior Nationals

Leyden’s Rebecca Rodgers and her “Team Podoll” are 3-2 after three days of competition at the USA Junior Women’s National Championship in Detroit, Mich.

Team Podoll is tied for fourth in the 10-team field. After starting the tournament with three straight wins, Team Podoll has dropped the past two matches. Rodgers has two more matches today when the tournament continues.

Ellis honored

Former Turners Falls High School basketball player Liam Ellis was named the Liberty League Performer of the Week Monday.

The Clarkson University junior guard scored a career-high 36 points Saturday during a victory over Vassar, which came one day after he posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists against Bard College.

Ellis ranks 10th in the Liberty League with 15.3 points per game, is tied for 22nd in rebounds (5.4), seventh in field-goal percentage (45.8 percent), sixth in free-throw shooting (82.5 percent) and second in assists (4.4).

High schools

Coaches vs. Cancer

Turners Falls High School will host Athol High School Thursday night for a series of Coaches vs. Cancer games.

The JV boys will open the night at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity girls’ game at 6. The varsity boys cap the tripleheader when they battle at 7:30.

Admission is $5 and there will be a 50/50 raffle as well. There will be special music played, coaches will be donning sneakers for the game and the cheerleaders will perform their tournament routine at halftime of the boys game as well. All money raised will be donated to the Coaches vs. Cancer Fund.

GHS First Responders night

Greenfield High School will host a First Responders Appreciation Night when the girls’ basketball team hosts Hopkins Academy on Feb. 13.

The varsity game starts at 7 p.m. at Nichols Gymnasium in Greenfield. All first responders and their family members gain free admission into the game. There will be a 50/50 raffle at halftime, while all first responders will be recognized at halftime.

GML Bingo Night

The Greenfield Minor League will hold a Bingo Night Saturday at the Greenfield Elks Club.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and Bingo begins at 7. There will also be raffles at the event.
