Bulletin Board: Gates leads Frontier girls’ 5/6 to weekend sweep

Molly Gates scored six points and pulled down 13 rebounds to go with two steals as Frontier defeated Westfield Black, 27-15, in a 5th and 6th grade Suburban League girls’ basketball game Sunday in South Deerfield.

Hailey Hutkoski scored five points, including a 3-pointer, and grabbed five rebounds and three steals, while Lilly Warchol added four points, a rebound and a steal. Claire Kirkendall contributed two points, seven boards and four steals, while Olivia Machon and Laney Landmark sparked the defensive effort.

• The weekend kicked off with a 30-22 win over Quaboag on the road Saturday, as Gates recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds as well as five steals.

Kirkendall totaled four points, four boards and three steals, while Brianna Hale (two points, two assists, three steals) and Madison McKemmie (four points, three rebounds) also paced Frontier in the win.

Turners 5th & 6th 

Hugh Cyhowski and Joey Mosca each finished in double figures, and the Turners Falls Montague Elks 5th & 6th grade Suburban League boys’ basketball team captured a 40-33 win over Amherst Sunday at Amherst Middle School.

Cyhowski scored 12 points in the win while Mosca added 10 points for Turners. Brandon Truesdell chipped in nine points for the winners.

Amherst was led by Neil Caniffe’s six points.

Youth hockey

FCHA mites

Chase Zraunig scored seven goals, and Nico Siano and Stefan Flaska combined for nine goals as Franklin County Hockey Association Green thumped Westfield, 18-5, in a Greater Springfield League Mites hockey game Saturday at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

Flaska added four assists, while Siano had a pair of assists in the win. Desmond Drake notched a goal and dished out five helpers, while Hayden Aurdrey (goal, two assists) and Carter Schloat (two assists) also helped the offense.

Jay McGinnis recorded 19 saves in net for FCHA, which received a solid defensive effort from Asa Bouchard.

Preps

DA hoops win

A big first half enabled Deerfield Academy to its first win of the season Monday evening.

The Big Green stormed out to a 15-point halftime advantage and coasted to a 66-51 win over Westminster School in Deerfield.

DA (1-4) is back at it Wednesday when it travels to play Pomfret School.
