Minutemen skates past No. 19 Union, 2-1

UMass hockey coach Greg Carvel picked up career win No. 100, as the Minutemen edged No. 19 Union College, 2-1, in a non-conference game Sunday night at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y.

Union led 1-0 in the first period before Oliver Chau scored his seventh goal of the season midway through the opening frame to tie the game for the Minutemen.

That score held until the the 12:27 mark of the second period, when Jake Gaudet buried what wound up being the game-winner on the power play for a 2-1 lead. Mario Ferraro and Mitchell Chaffee set up both goals for UMass, which held on from there thanks to 31 saves from goaltender Ryan Wischow.

The win, the team’s second of the season against Union, puts the Minutemen at 9-7 overall, giving them a winning record entering the winter break. UMass doesn’t play again until Jan. 5 when it travels to Yale.

UM women win

Maggie Mulligan scored 19 points and pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds as the UMass women’s basketball team defeated Saint Peter’s, 81-65, in a non-conference game at the Mullins Center.

UMass (7-4) had four players finish in double figures. Genesis Rivera scored 23 points, while Bre Hampton-Bey poured in 20 points. Hailey Leidel added 10 points.

The Minutewomen travel to play at UMass-Lowell Wednesday night.

Preps

NMH hockey wins

Kyle Kazeroid and Kyle Valiquette had two goals apiece, and Northfield Mount Hermon picked up a 9-2 win over Academie Saint Louis in prep hockey action Saturday at McCollum Arena in Gill.

Mike Kennedy tallied once and added three assists in the win for the Hoggers, while Devan Tongue also scored once and notched a pair of assists.

Youth hockey

FCHA Mites

Vinny Grima scored five goals and added an assist as Franklin County Hockey Association Platinum and FCHA Gold played to a 12-12 tie Saturday at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

Grace Laurie scored three goals on the day, while Max Caron, Charley Knight, Patrick McCarthy, Mylena Prunier each tallied. Ryan Capen added an assist while Colin Galli finished with 13 saves.

High schools

Wave JV hockey

Adam Savoy scored the lone goal with assists from Kyle Barnes and Matt Wilhite, but the Greenfield High School JV hockey team fell to Longmeadow High School, 6-1, in action Sunday at Fitzpatrick Arena in Holyoke.

Jordyn Lavallee recorded 23 saves in net for Greenfield.
